Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Consultations

XCITEs Engaged Teaching team is available to speak to UCR faculty on issues related to diversity and inclusivity questions that arise in their teaching, and or designing their courses. Student population across our university is increasingly diverse. We should consider how a variety of student backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge may reshape classroom expectations, behaviors, and activities. We at XCITE support inclusive climates and practices. Inclusive pedagogy refers to designing our courses, classroom activities, curricula, and assessments to be inclusive of all our students' diverse needs. It is an effort to engage all our students in learning that is meaningful, relevant, and accessible.

Teaching inclusively requires intentional effort by instructors to help students overcome barriers to learning. Below are some examples to get you started in implementing inclusive pedagogy practices in your classroom.

XCITE frequently hosts workshops on this topic, see our event page.

Every year during the third week of the Fall quarter, XCITE hosts Teaching and Learning Week, which is dedicated to workshops, discussions, and special guests on the topic of Inclusive Teaching. The events are all hosted in the XCITE Center located in the Rivera library

XCITE's Engaged Teaching team is available to speak to UCR faculty on issues related to diversity and inclusivity questions that arise in their teaching, and or designing their courses.

Feel free to visit us at either of our two locations in Rivera Library

Gender Lived Name Policy

UCR is now fully compliant with the Gender Recognition and Lived Name Policy. With this policy in full effect, we ask that faculty familiarize themselves with this policy and be aware of its effect on classroom teaching.  All members of the UCR community are able to ensure that their lived names will be consistently used across all UCR systems. Per this policy, legal names are now protected entities.

Academic Data Related to DEI

Faculty members can see the student demographics, DFW rates, and equity gaps for your courses by navigating to the UCR Academic Data Dashboards, or https://ir.ucr.edu/academic_data_dashboard.

DEI Initiatives

Faculty are invited to participate or learn about several ongoing DEI initiatives that UCR is partnering with either other universities or external organizations.

  • Student Experience Project (SEP)

About: “SEP Resource Hub” From their website: “The Student Experience Project (SEP) is committed to transforming the college student experience and creating equitable learning environments through innovative, evidence-based practices that increase degree attainment.” SEP has additional resources that we can offer UCR faculty. Please contact the XCITE Engaged Teaching team via xcite-help@ucr.edu .

  • AAAS SEA Change

From their website: “The University of California has become the nation’s first university system to join the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s STEMM Equity Achievement Change program, or SEA Change.

The SEA Change initiative focuses on eliminating systemic barriers to participation in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine, collectively known as the STEMM fields, and fostering engagement with communities underrepresented in — and historically excluded from — those fields.”

Contact Richard Edwards via email for more information.

  • Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Inclusive Excellence 3

From their website: “The HHMI Inclusive Excellence 3 (IE3) initiative challenges U.S. colleges and universities to substantially and sustainably build their capacity for student belonging, especially for those who have been historically excluded from the sciences. IE3 is distinct from previous HHMI science education initiatives because it begins with a learning phase and, during that phase, learning communities envision how to move cooperatively into an implementation phase.”

A cohort of CNAS faculty are working with XCITE in the RIDLE initiative to advance the goals of the inclusive excellence 3 initiative. If you are a STEM faculty member please reach out to xcite-help@ucr.edu for more information.

  • Equity Summer Institute

From their website: “The Summer Institute on Equity in the Academic Experience is a working institute. Our motto is, “come with a goal, leave with a plan.” We seek participation by a diverse group of U.S. colleges and universities. Each institution assembles one or more teams of faculty, staff, and administrators whose complementary perspectives and expertise can best advance meaningful equity work. Informed by roundtables and workshops, and coached by experts and peer practitioners, campus teams workshop projects that will improve equitable access and outcomes for low-income, first-generation, and students of color at their institutions.”

In Summer 2023, a group of UCR staff and faculty came together to attend the Summer Equity Institute. UCR is intending to join the 2024 institute. If you are interested in participating please contact Richard Edwards for more information.

  • Equity / Excellence Imperative (UERU)

From their website: “In 2021, the Association for Undergraduate Education at Research Universities convened the Boyer 2030 Commission, charged with designing a 2030 Blueprint for Excellence & Equity in Undergraduate Education at U.S. Research Universities. This blue-ribbon Commission is co-chaired by Barbara R. Snyder, President, Association of American Universities; and Peter McPherson, President Emeritus, Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. The Equity/Excellence Imperative was released in October 2022 in both print and open-source ebook formats.”
